It's April, my fave month. Spring's here, summer's right around the bend and I start feeling an energy that was kind of dormant for a few months.

Also, now's the time to really turn it on so you feel better and look better as you go into the summertime months. So, don't procrastinate, get moving

* Herbal remedy benefits

1) Cilantro could help with blood sugar and cardiac health. Some people dislike what they perceive as a metallic aftertaste but most people love this herb. I use cilantro like I do parsley putting it in potato dishes, soupy pastas and of course salsa.

2) Sage protects cells from oxidation, so it is a terrific antioxidant and aids memory and liver health. Sage tea is pleasant-tasting and sage could be added to sauces. For more, visit Herbal Remedies World page on the health benefits of sage

* Sleep more, play better

That's the strategy for increasing speed, reflexes and strength according to a study at Stanford University.

Stanford U's studies on the effects of increased sleep (aim for at least eight hours, preferably 10) show improvements for sports participants - tennis, runners, swimmers, basketballers, soccer, football.

* Hypertension? Exercise later on in the day

British researchers suggest that for people with cardio risk factors, especially hypertension, exercising later on in the day may be safer than a.m. exercise.

Why? Arteries loosen up throughout the day allowing more blood flow. In the morning, same arteries may be slightly narrowed.

* Bottled water, healthy water & pollution The issue of bottled water makes the big screen.

A new documentary, "Tapped the Movie" is being screened at selected theaters between March 22 - April 22. You can also order the Videodisk from their website.

Healthy Water took up bottled water problems here bottled water facts

Healthy Water discussed whether the water in the bottles was healthy. Often, it is just water from the tap.

Another issue discussed was pollution, the inevitable outcome of all of those disposable bottles on the environment.

What we didn't really fully discuss was the controversial issue of whether the plastic that these bottles were made from really contaminated the water it was holding. The film goes into this issue at length.

It makes sense to think that plastic can release some of its constituents into the water and that those constituents can lead to health problems.

My solution is to try and store filtered water in glass decanters. I use the free ones that come with Aquasana orders but any good glass container would do.

Anyway, this isn't the venue for an extensive discussion of those issues and movie.

* Quercetin supplement raises endurance

I've sometimes used a line of products from FRS intended to increase endurance. FRS features quercetin which is a terrific anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory. Also boosts immunity.

It seemed to work well but I honestly can't hurdle over the high price of FRS products. Well one solution is to just buy supplemental quercetin and take before a workout.

I have found that eating a small block of semi-sweetened dark chocolate and taking a good vitamin, even a quercetin tab is cheaper, more delicious and just as effective as FRS products before a workout.

The chocolate has high anti-oxidant activity, a little boost of sugar and caffeine to increase endurance, like the FRS products. (Chocolate is also being credited with many other health benefits like improving cardiac health and cholesterol.)

* Health care we can really believe in

With HC debate raging, natural means to health need more attention.

Especially considering the effects of exercise and herbs on our health.

Consider the high level of prescription medications found in the water, the environment. Hey, where do you think all of those medications go?

So if you really want to go green and improve health care, exercise more and use more herbs.
