Following is a brief discussion of the dehydration - low blood pressure connection, how/why dehydration leads to “hypotension,” & natural treatment for low blood pressure
A dehydration - low blood pressure connection might seem surprising since we normally assume dehydration leads to high blood pressure.
However, dehydration is one of the causes of low blood pressure. The natural treatment for low blood pressure is more complicated than natural approaches to reducing high blood pressure.
How dehydration causes low blood pressure
*A very serious situation is hypovolemic shock, which is a life-threatening effect of dehydration. It occurs when blood volume gets very low causing a sudden drop in blood pressure. This leads to a drastic reduction of oxygen reaching your tissues. Untreated, severe hypovolemic shock can cause death within a few minutes or hours.
Cells that aren’t fully plumped with water lead to decreased blood volume. Decreased blood volume leads to arteries not being adequately filled & that causes low blood pressure.
*Another dehydration - low blood pressure scenario occurs when the blood vessels have poor tone and are weak. This may occur as a result of chronic illness, aging or vessel fatigue that may result from years of contracting and relaxing. When this occurs you may suffer from low blood pressure. Blood vessels become saggy and not properly filled.
*Ironically, if you suffer from high blood pressure for many years, the vessels may become weakened because they were constantly stretched out. There is not enough blood to fill the blood vessels and so you may end up suffering from low blood pressure later on.
Natural treatment for low blood pressure
Breaking the dehydration - low blood pressure connection is more complicated than approaches for high blood pressure. The approach must consider the cause & the sufferer must use a total approach that includes exercise & possibly herbal medicine to raise blood pressure to healthy level.
*If the cause is low blood volume due to dehydration, the treatment is fairly simple. Drink more water until you reach at least a daily consumption of between 10 - 12 glasses (depending on many factors). Cells may not be immediately receptive to the extra water so be patient.
Click on navigation tab (Healthy Hydration) for recommendations on how much water to drink.
*Also, if you are not in good physical shape, exercise, especially aerobic exercise will actually increase the amount of blood in your system. In a sense, exercise’s increasing blood volume also increases your level of physical hydration.
*If your low blood pressure comes from unfilled blood vessels due to saggy, weak vessels, the prescription is similar to having low blood volume.
However, you must stress exercise as much as hydration because exercise may improve vessel tone & increase blood volume, while the extra water further increases blood volume.
