Clean Water: Still Elusive

The NY Times has delved into the issue of water contamination on frequent items in 2009. Good for them and us because while many “sexier” political issues take their place in media, a more “boring” issue, the access to clean, safe water trumps the importance of virtually all other issues. Excerpt and link to item follows.

Rightly celebrated as one of this country’s most important environmental statutes, the 1972 Clean Water Act has greatly improved the quality of America’s waters, turning contaminated rivers and lakes into swimmable, fishable and even drinkable waters.

But even its staunchest allies agree that the act has grown old and fallen well short of its goals, crippled by uneven and sometimes nonexistent enforcement by state and federal agencies — particularly during the Bush years, but even before — and by shortcomings in the law itself.

Dehydration and Flying: You can't afford to ignore the effects

Dr. Dara helpfully points out the need to address symptoms of dehydration while flying. Important for passengers who wish to minimize jet lag. More important for pilots who need to avoid pilot error that may result from dehydration. Brief excerpt and link to item on flying, jet lag dehydration follows.

By Dr. Parvez Dara (10/28/2009)

We all know that proper hydration is vital to good health. In the case of flying, it is even more critical. Not only is dehydration more likely at altitude and its effects more pronounced, but the consequences of losing one's competitive edge are that much more life-threatening when at the controls of a flying machine.

Wilm. woman warns of health issues from contaminated water

Healthy Water has noted the problems with contaminated water at camp Lejeune. Now the problem seems to be radiating out into the general population. Excerpt on this issue and link to item follows.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - More and more people believe health problems are stemming from contaminated water at Camp Lejeune. Now, a Wilmington woman is gaining credit for getting people help for the people who say they're victims.

Terry Dyer can now enjoy a glass of water while sitting on her porch, but it wasn't too long ago she blamed the water for her health problems.

Dyer was diagnosed with bladder cancer in May, and believes water at Camp Lejeune made her and thousands of others ill. She said she was exposed to high volumes of PCE, which is one of the causes of bladder cancer.

Fresh fears over contaminated water

The next item hits close to home (New Jersey) and deals with Big Industry‘s sometimes irresponsibility towards our environment. Excerpt and link follow below.

Fresh fears are emerging in Jersey that drinking water in St Ouen's Bay may still be polluted.

Almost 10 years after cancer-causing chemicals were found in the water supplies around the airport, new questions are being raised in the States about their longer lasting effects.

The States reached a deal with chemical giant 3M, after it was found that foam used by airport firefighters contained PFOS, which is harmful when it gets into the water supply.

Coffee a suitable sports drink?

The following item tackles the issue of coffee and symptoms of dehydration. The connection is not terribly clear and coffee may not be the villain that it has been purported to be. Healthy Water has dealt with issue on a previous page. Excerpt and links follow.

Moderate amounts of caffeinated drinks, including coffee, before exercise or before a game are acceptable and can even provide benefits for an athlete used to drinking such beverages.

Rehydrating Sick Children

A potentially serious consequence of severe vomiting and diarrhea is dehydration (an abnormally low level of water in the body). Adequate fluid levels are needed to maintain the volume of blood in the body. As the body loses fluid, it also loses electrolytes, electrically charged minerals (like sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphate and magnesium), that are important for muscle action and many of the body’s processes.
