How Safe Is Your Water?

The issue of the pervasiveness of contaminated water really took center stage in September (2009) with several large news organizations pointing ti recent studies on water contamination. Excerpt from the NY Times follows, then link to complete article.

Is your drinking water safe? That depends on several factors: the source; the treatment the water receives, if any; and the quality of the pipes in your home.

What is E coli and why can it be deadly?

Healthy Water has discussed problems with E. coli on various pages. Following is an excerpt to article on subject and link to full item.

Escherichia coli, or E. coli, is a common bacterium that lives in the intestines of most warm-blooded animals, including humans. All of us have billions of E. coli bacteria in our guts. The overwhelming majority of strains are harmless or even beneficial to their hosts, as they generate vitamin K, an important micronutrient, and crowd out other, more dangerous bacteria.

A few E. coli strains, however, are pathogens that can cause serious infections. Among the most potent of these is the O157:H7 strain, which is responsible for the outbreak traced to Godstone Farm.

Home Filtering Systems Provide Best Drinking Water Protection

New York Times study shows one in 10 Americans potentially exposed

Article picked up from newswires speak to issue of widespread water contamination as alluded to above. Item also recommends water filters as best solution to problem. Excerpt and link to full article follows.

LISLE, Ill., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Following a comprehensive New York Times study revealing that ten percent of Americans face dangerous drinking water, the Water Quality Association today urges consumers to consider installing final contaminant barriers in their homes.

On Sunday, the newspaper reported results of its research in the second part of a major series on "toxic waters." Among its findings:

-- Ten percent of Americans "have been exposed to drinking water that contains dangerous chemicals or fails to meet a federal health Benchmark in other ways."

-- Wells are more likely than municipal water systems to contain contaminants.

-- An estimated 19.5 million Americans "fall ill" every year to contaminated water.

The EPA Must Respond to Toxic Water

There is little that needs to be added to following article on water contamination. Just linking kids and exposure to water pollution sends quivers up my spine. Excerpt follows including link to article.

The article was about kids who live in homes with water so contaminated by coal slurries that their nightly baths leave their bodies covered in rashes, or even worse, the skin has been eaten away, leaving behind raw red oozing scabs.

As Charles Duhigg so painfully and eloquently exposes the irreparable damages being inflicted upon the families living in a coal town just outside of Charleston, West Virginia, the Clean Water Act of 1972 is repeatedly being violated and ignored, and sadly not just there but across the country. Unsurprisingly, the coal companies and their continuing quest to flatten the Appalachians are amongst the worst violators, but you know that if you've been following Bobby Kennedy's passionate reporting on the raping of one of the greatest of the United State's natural resources and landmarks.

You mean we really do need bottled water?

Mmm…yeah, bottled water could be good if you bottle your own fresh filtered water in a reusable container. But for a take on issue, click on link after excerpt.

I have always boasted about the fact that I have never bought a bottle of water in this country or in Europe.  Long before I even thought about the environmental implications of all those plastic bottles, or all that fuel used to transport the stuff, I thought it was an idiotic waste of money.

Now I find out I’m wrong, wrong, wrong.

Research shows that an estimated one in 10 Americans have been exposed to drinking water that contains dangerous chemicals or fails to meet a federal health benchmark in other ways.

Check liquid assets

The following item discusses reasons for bottled water. Again fill up your own water bottles with fresh filtered water. Excerpt and link to item follows.

It’s a good thing water bottles have become ‘cool.’ It makes coping with high heat and humidity more convenient and even fashionable when bottles promote your favorite sports team or have handles or built-in straws. Water bottles are an important tool in helping to protect outdoor workers, athletes, exercise enthusiasts, older adults and children at play from summertime health risks.
