1) How to cut weight and die The article explains how dehydration is actually courted by athletes in an effort to lose weight. Of course we know that the best way to lose excess water is to drink more water. Cutting back on fluids, including water, will produce some temporary weight loss. But even if the strategy is meant to just make some weight it is unhealthy and possibly dangerous to follow strategy. For one thing, it may take days to get back to the previous level of healthy hydration. A great deal of water can be lost very quickly. However, dehydrating fully takes much longer. When you consider the damaging effects dehydration symptoms can have on health and especially its immediate effects on sports performance it is clear that dehydrating yourself to lose weight is incredibly misguided. Excerpt from article and link to, follows. Dehydration is one of the most popular ways to lose weight among athletes – particularly in those sports where weight classes are required such as boxing, wrestling, martial arts, weightlifting, and powerlifting. Millions of athletes around the world engage in this destructive form of weight loss just to “make weight” without regard to the potential consequences. The following article highlights the importance of adequate, healthy hydration especially in a place like Arizona (U.S.) where the environment tends to dehydrate. Excerpt follows as does the link to full article. I live in Arizona and dehydration is very common here because people simply do not consume enough water. In fact, 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. Truth is good health depends on good hydration. They say we need to drink approximately half our body weight in ounces minimum each day. So if you weighted 140 pounds, then you would need to drink 70 ounces of water. That seems simple enough to remember. Why is water so important to not only us desert dwellers in Arizona but for the human body in general? Well if you look at the human body it is like a machine, and like any machine in order to work properly, it needs lubrication. Water is the lubrication for the human machine. Water also has the ability to cool the body down so the human machine does not overheat. Maybe IU could offer a course titled Water 101 to freshmen. Could you think of many other courses that could be as helpful? Just use Healthy water as source material and save students hundreds of dollars in books. Excerpt follows, then link. If you moved to Bloomington within the last 25 years or so, you might not have heard about the PCB (polychlorinated biphenyls) debacle in Bloomington and the surrounding area. It's not the kind of information that IU gives its incoming freshmen during orientation or that realtors and landlords bring up with their prospective home buyers and tenants. Six PCB Superfund sites lie within 20 miles of the Courthouse Square. And PCBs cause cancer, neurologic disorders, endocrine system disruption, reproductive problems and birth defects in people and nonhuman animals. Often associated with PCBs are other chlorinated hydrocarbons, such as dioxin and furans. Dioxin is the most powerful chemical carcinogen known. It's second only to radiation as the most potent carcinogen discovered to date. It was used in the Vietnam War as a defoliant called Agent Orange.
