Dehydration treatment

This page summarizes dehydration treatment that is outlined on many pages on specific disorders & needs.

Generally, the treatment of an illness stemming from chronic dehydration follows certain guidelines regardless of the particular condition.

When considering treatment of dehydration, you need to consider 1)severity & 2)whether dehydration is impacting the very young or elderly.

Treatment of dehydration - severe dehydration

Dehydration treatment made simple
If for whatever reason, dehydration appears to be severe, it needs to be treated by a medical doctor.

It is possible to self treat correctly. However, the consequences of severe dehydration could be so damaging & come on so rapidly, that self treatment becomes a gamble with your very life.

Severe dehydration is usually accompanied by immediate serious symptoms to brain functioning (feeling faint, dizzy, confused), heart symptoms (racing heart, weak heart beat, ,erratic beat), breathing problems, extreme fatigue.

Those symptoms, especially some combination of them, are a signal to go for immediate emergency medical attention.

Dehydration treatment of young & elderly

If symptoms appear in an elderly person or young child, early treatment is more urgent than for healthy adults. Both groups have less margin of error for dehydration because their bodies have less water available to them & they tend to lose remaining liquids quicker than healthy adults.

The consequences of dehydration become more severe, sooner, for the young and the old. Act quickly.

Dehydration treatment - mild to moderate dehydration

Treatment of dehydration - guidelines to avoid chronic dehydration *Aim at drinking at least ½ your weight in ounces per day. If you weigh 150 pounds, aim for 75 ounces of water daily.

*Increase water intake but do so gradually. If you are drinking 2 glasses of water per day, increasing it to 6 will just lead to increased urination. Increase ½ glass per day until you reach your target.

*Drink water spaced out throughout the day, especially on an empty stomach.

*Add a little sea salt to water & foods. Since lack of minerals causes osteoporosis, make sure to take a well rounded mineral supplement. However, cut back on salty foods & cheap table salt.

*Do not stop efforts at hydration because you don’t see immediate results. Your body may need days or weeks for cells to begin to plump up with the extra water ingested.
