A soldier's answer to the question, "How much water Should I drink a day?" is different from a proofreader's answer.
A soldier probably needs much more water.
How much water one needs to drink depends on lifestyle, age, weight and goals. Scroll down for information on particular water needs.
Theoretically
We should drink what we lose.
We lose about 2 and 1/2 quarts of water a day. Some of that water is regained through foods, about 1one quart.
So, we are left with a water need of 1 and 1/2 quarts of water a day, at a minimum.
But that amount is just a very rough estimate and not nearly enough considering many other factors that raise our water needs.
How much water a child should drink also depends though the basic recommendations are the same regardless of age, condition and lifestyle.
Recommendations for everyone
Water need rises with certain factors.
1)If you eat dry, concentrated and/or fatty foods, you require more water. You need more water to help digest dry or fatty foods.
2)Eating salty foods raises your water needs. You must eliminate excess salt through urinations or serious health problems will follow, like high blood pressure.
3)If you eat a lot of convenience food, fast foods, snacks, processed foods, you should add a glass or 2 per day. This is because such foods contain high levels of chemical preservatives. These chemicals should be flushed out and drinking water is the best way to flush them.
4)If you deal with a lot of stress you need to raise your water intake. Why? Stress increases your metabolism and an increased metabolism uses up more water.
5)The more you weigh, the more water you require, just for basic functions like digestion, blood circulation and any other function.
6)How much water to drink per day also depends on if you live in high altitudes mostly because your metabolism is faster. This causes more water loss.
7)If you exercise, you need more water to replace lost fluids. Drink before, during and after exercising.
If you exercise more than an hour, you will certainly be dehydrated for a few hours because you lose more water than your body could absorb. But that's OK in this case.
Drink a quart of water for each hour you exercise. Drink at least until the urge to urinate returns.
8)How much water to drink per day depends on whether your goals are hydration, rehydration, mineralization and/or detoxification you will need common sense schedules and amounts.
Children need less water than adults but it is more important that they alway be hydrated. If not, growth and development could be affected.
Luckily, children usually have intense thirst sensation. The trick is to help them develop a liking for water and not just juices, milk or soft drinks.
Recommendations above apply to children also. They should be drinking a little over half their weight in ounces of water. So, if a child weighs 100 pounds, he should drink a little over 50 ounces of water.
Not enough attention is devoted to the topic of how much water should kids drink but this is a vital question.
Make sure to encourage your children to drink and learn to like water.
