How dehydration affects your skin
At the earliest stage of dehydration, that occurs many times daily, mild dehydration affects the skin before any other part of the body.
There are several reasons for this.
First, your skin has lots of water to spare.
Also, keeping skin hydrated is not as important as keeping vital organs hydrated and blood liquidy.
Just another example of our bodies making wise decisions about how to divide up this precious resource.
Unfortunately, this does not do much for our appearance.
All about youthful skin
Healthy skin is mostly water. In fact, the average adult skin holds between 2 - 3 gallons of water.
This water must be replenished constantly to maintain health and appearance. The reason for this is that the skin loses a great deal of water (sweat) even when you are not aware of it.
Even if you are inactive, your skin will lose a quart of water per day. A moderate workout can result in the loss of a quart of water per hour of exercise.
That means that adults will lose between 1 - 3 quarts of water per day through the skin.
The sweat that forms on our skin is 99% water and 1% solids. These solids include worn out minerals, wastes and contaminants that our bodies expel.
Don't drink water for healthy skin? You'll experience...

*More importantly, there could be more serious health consequences to skin dehydration. If skin is just operating to draw water to itself, it has fewer resources to fight off skin disorders and fend off the effects of harmful substances that come into contact with the skin.
