New study confirms mild dehydration leads to multiple health symptoms
Following is a discussion of an important governmental study on the many symptoms of mild dehydration.
Healthy Water posits the many effects of mild dehydration on humans. Many connections are based on clinical evidence, anecdotal observations and assumptions. Unfortunately, there are few controlled experimental studies that are undertaken on the short term and long term effects of dehydration on human health. This has resulted in criticisms of our assumptions which are based largely on the writings of Dr. Batmanghelidj. Usually, such critiques are difficult to address. The only controlled studies on the effects of dehydration on humans are on the short term effects of dehydration on sports performance. Such studies have consistently found dehydration to immediately negatively effect sports performance. Studies on the effects of dehydration on health are few in number. Good studies would need to be long term and preferably under controlled circumstances. Satisfying both criteria would be practicably impossible. Even if such a study were to be designed it would be too expensive to undertake. Think about it. Who would fund an expensive study on water? We think that the studies available, and numerous clinical observations, offer enough for us to infer that the effects of dehydration are profound even if dehydration is mild. Such effects are probably even more profound when such dehydration becomes chronic. Well, just recently another controlled experiment was conducted on the effects of dehydration on humans (college students) during exercise in cooperation with several governmental agencies. The result? The dehydrated group showed all of the performance decrements previously found. What was new was that the study also found the dehydrated group to exhibit negative mood, including fatigue and confusion compared to the hydrated group. The researchers maintained that the level of dehydration in the dehydrated group was roughly equivalent to that of most people who go about their day not drinking enough water. We think that would be most people. Most people simply do not think about keeping sufficiently hydrated. The condition often becomes chronic. We become used to the symptoms of dehydration. This study adds a some confirmation to the idea that mild dehydration effects a wide range of health conditions and over time leads to serious chronic disorders including heart disease and cancer. Why might even mild dehydration effect a wide range of functions and systems? Because dehydration occurs at the cellular level, inside all cells. That means every system and function has the potential to be effected by dehydration. Original source article for this page can be found at this link
