Following are a number of reader testimonials on the importance of treating dehydration symptoms & of proper hydration.
The testimonials on beating chronic dehydration are of Dr. Batmanghelidj’s important books on dehydration symptoms & treatment but they also offer a perspective on the importance of preventing & treating dehydration symptoms.
Many of the following comments attest to how proper hydration can “heal” a number of conditions
Some of the testimonials have been edited for readability. Also, my comments on the reviews are in italics.
The following testimonial shows a good degree of understanding concerning hydration & balancing minerals.
1) Water and Sea Salt = Wellness, June 15, 2006, By Marcus T. Brody (Long Island, NY)
This book is revolutionary. Everyone should have his… Most diseases are directly related to either dehydration or mineral deficiency. The water addresses the dehydration, and the unrefined sea salt addresses the deficiencies. The tandem go hand in hand, and you really can't go wrong.
Mixing the sea salt into the water makes a "saline solution" type of water, that I find to be extremely balancing, hydrating, and the minerals in the sea salt structure the water (reducing the surface tension). The water becomes "alive" and ready to nourish your 60 trillion cells.
I can't say enough great things about his work.
2) Common Sense Prevails at Last, February 19, 2008, By Robert M. Williamson (Scotland UK) This review is from: Your Body's Many Cries for Water (Paperback)
I have always been interested in ways to improve my health & because of this I have remained very active. I am 69 years of age and joined a fitness club 18 Months ago which has kept me very active.
However, I had minor complaints. For example, my breathing was not what it should be despite doing quite a bit of running. Also I developed a slight problem with my left hip. I put this down to inflammation but niggling at the back of my mind was that the hip joint had gone.
I came across an article about water.
Like most people I assumed that I drank enough water. My eyes were soon opened after I read this book. I started putting into practice what I read and the results have been amazing.
Not only has my breathing improved but the pain in my hip has very much decreased. Moreover, my blood pressure dropped and I am now free of medication. I am also more alert and have a lot more energy.
I would ask anyone who purchases this book, easily read and understood, to keep and open mind and give the princples dicussed a chance. They will be delighted with the results. I have recommended this book to a number of the younger generation at my club and also to close friends. Certainly a very worthwhile buy.
3) Don't listen to the negative reviews, try it yourself!!!!, March 5, 2004, By "aggressivepeace" (San Francisco, CA) This review is from: Your Body's Many Cries for Water (Paperback)
I think Mr. Urologist (I wont use Dr.) has no clue what he is talking about. I have no medical degree and can tell you that what he is saying is asinine. Water intoxication, in most cases, is found in tri-athletes, marathoners, and military. It only happens when they have drank EXCESSIVE (generally over 200 ounces) amounts in a small period of time. This caused their sodium and mineral balances to go awry and they got sick or died. If the Pee Doctor had actually read the book, he would see that Dr. Batman talks repeatedly about adding sea salt to your intake if you have concerns about water intoxication.
I have had the following benefits from increasing my water intake to half my body weight in ounces per day, plus an additional 1.5 ounces of water for every 1 ounce of caffeinated beverages. (for me this is 128 ounces of water a day, I weigh 220 and drink one 12-ounce soda a day) Again, following is a list of the benefits I have had. If you don't believe me you are foolish. I have no reason to lie.
*no depression
*more energy
*Sleeping better
*skin more elastic and generally healthier (I am getting compliments about my face)
*increased sense of well-being or doing something positive for myself
*full, clear urine
*full, regular excrement
*no back pain (lower)
*reduced knee/joint pain
*less pain in my damaged ulnar nerve
*eat less
*feel tired less
*awareness of thirst has returned (I don't eat or do something else instead)
*less heartburn
The absolute most positive and main effect is no depression. I am entirely astounded at the positive effect this has had on my life. I have gotten off meds and will never return, for now I know the true answer. Meds are good to get you through a bad spot, but they will not relieve your depression effectively over a long period of time. This doesn't even consider the horrible side effects.
It is so clear that this is the healthiest thing that you can ever do for yourself (a close #2 is regular cardiovascular and muscle-building exercise). I personally commit that you will have increased health and mentality if you drink the correct amount of water for yourself. Also, consult Dr. Weil regarding the power of your mind towards your health.
Peace and good hydration to you all.
Thanks Dr. Batman!!!!!! you are a life saver. I hope your message gets to more and more people. I am now having friends come back to me stating how they are noticing differences for themselves. No one really believes it until it happens to them, and when my friends saw the sincerity I had about my improvement they tried it themselves.
Thanks again. You have truly made the world a better place.
4) Drawing Attention to the Many Values of Enough Pure Water!, July 24, 2001 By Donald Mitchell "a Practical Optimist" (Boston) This review is from: Your Body's Many Cries for Water (Paperback)
Before reviewing the book, let me mention that I heard Dr. Batmanghelidj talk and later met him about ten years ago at a conference I attended. During the Iranian Revolution, he was imprisoned along with many members of the Shah's supporters. Because he was a physician, he was often told by the guards to treat the other prisoners. In doing this, he usually had no medicines or instruments. The prisoners often were suffering from stomach ulcers and were cut off from their normal medications. Often, all he could do was to get the patients to drink some water. To his own surprise, water drinking helped many feel better. After a time, it seemed like the effect was stronger than what a mere placebo could cause. After he was pardoned by the new regime, he voluntarily stayed in prison to begin to run experiments testing his informal observations. Since leaving Iran, he has done much research in reviewing the published literature and has conducted further experiments. This book is based on what he has learned since then.
I bought the book, and began drinking more water. I found that my weight dropped more than 20 pounds in about four months, I had more energy, and my allergies improved. I also found that I had less desire for caffeine and alcohol. My mood improved, as well.
Since then, I have given this book as a gift to dozens of people who described themselves as having the potentially water-related health problems described in this volume. Most of them have reported improvements. I have not had such a positive response from any other health book that I have shared with others.
The book's basic point is that our bodies are 75 percent water. Because we are so dependent on keeping this balance (especially in our brains), the body has many mechanisms to conserve water for its most essential uses. When we become too dehydrated for too long, these conservation systems can produce unpleasant and unhealthy symptoms of pain, high blood pressure, depression, and allergies. Most physicians will treat the symptom rather than looking for potential causes. In many cases, water will help. The book explains why for pain from dyspepsia, colitis, false appendicitis attacks, general abdominal pressure, rheumatoid arthritis, back and neck pressure, angina, and headaches. He also addresses water-related mechanisms for helping relieve stress, depression, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, excessive weight, asthma, allergies, and diabetes.
Although I am not a scientist or a physician, the arguments seemed solid enough to try more water. At the same time, I could see no harm from drinking more water. I believe I have been helped, especially by drinking more water before, during, and after long plane flights.
Dr. Batmanghelidj also includes his ideas about how AIDS could be related to body chemistry imbalances in the book. This section does not fit with the rest of the material or to drinking more water, and I did not know what to make of it.
The basic problem is that as we get older, we lose our sense of thirst. As a result, unless we pay attention to drinking more water, we won't drink enough.
If you are like me, you will find that you have to spread the water out over the day to get the right amount. I usually drink one eight-ounce serving at a time. I prefer bottled water, and often put fruit slices in it for variety. But when bottled water isn't available, I let tap water sit long enough for the chlorine to leave. I also choose clear soups, and vegetables and fruits with lots of water content when they are available. This reduces how much has to be drunk as water.
Many people who drink little water tell me that they do not have access to clean rest rooms during much of the day. For those individuals, learning to time water consumption is critical.
The book's main drawback is that it doesn't have the editorial simplification that we are accustomed to seeing in health books. As a result, you will probably find it rambling. I graded the book down one star for this quality.
After you finish having your first glass of water to help you start enjoying life more, I suggest that you think about whether or not you are getting enough sleep. Although most of us can get along with very little for a while, doing that too long simply produces stress and other debiliating side effects. I found that water drinking helped me sleep better, and enjoy feeling more rested in the morning. I hope you do too!
To your good health!
The following earnest testimonial is honest to a fault.
5) A skeptic converts, March 10, 2004, By Robin Rheaume (Singapore) This review is from: Your Body's Many Cries for Water (Paperback)
I have to admit that when I started to read this I thought the guy was a crackpot. For starters his claims seem outrageous: that water can treat and possibly cure most medical problems including heart disease, MS, hiatal hernia, obesity, headaches, backache, some cancers, etc. etc. Plus his book is filed with numerous photocopies of testimonial letters from patients claiming to have been cured by his water prescriptions. There were enough letters (circa 1993 and apparently all of his patients used typewriters which certainly dates the work) that instead of them being a comfort, they seemed to hint at an insecurity... "I know you think I'm crazy but look at all these people who believe in me." It made the presentation look less than professional. It lacked confidence.
However, he backs up his claims with some fairly detailed explanations of how the body works and the number of ways water comes into play. It certainly appears to have solid scientific foundation. And even though I can't shake off the idea that he's a bit of an eccentric, the message is potentially too important to discard offhand. I think if you ignore this information, you do so at your peril. You certainly cannot be harmed by his suggestions - you can only gain. In a way this info is so basic that I would recommend reading this before picking up any other book about your health ... particularly those in the diet category. Read Batmanghelidj before Atkins for sure.
The one major downside is that he doesn't really spell out a regime for how much water you should consume or when. From the testimonial letters you can roughly estimate the requirement but he should definitely consider bringing this info out in future editions of this book.
For being such an outspoken pioneer this work deserves 5 stars.
6) You're not sick, you're thirsty!, March 7, 2006, By Bugsie Cozmo "Waterworld" (California)
This is an informative book about many illnesses that we have nowadays that doctors prescribe medicine for and which could be solved, if not cured, by water. Unfortunately you have to start your water regime early on, preferably in childhood, so all parents who love their children should read this.
It is not clear that you must start to drink water early on in life & if not properly hydrating when young is reversible. However, for some whose conditions do not improve after hydrating, I might be that early chronic dehydration may have caused irreversible processes.
7) Mahesh Bhanumurthy
A million thanks to Dr. Batman for his excellent research on the relationship between dehydration and the body's many diseases and conditions. I've been religiously following his methods for about a month now and my body is responding beautifully. I have become more aware of my body's functioning and constipation is now a thing of the past. With toxins flushed out of the body more regularly, I feel more energetic and mentally alert. My skin tone and texture have improved visibly. I have 2 to 2.5 liters of water per day with dissolved crystal sea-salt. I have much better sleep.
My mother has arthritis in her knee and hip joints for many years now and she has tried calcium, vitmain D, Glucosamine, Chondroitin, massage, etc., but nothing has given her relief. Now that she is following Dr. Batman's water cure, she confirmed that her joint pains have come down by about 50% 2-3 weeks after she started the therapy. This is amazing. My wife too has reduced her dependence and frequency of use of asthma pumps after following the instructions for the same.
You owe it to yourself to give this therapy a chance because it's the most natural treatment you can have without any side effects. I highly recommend that you buy this book and also "Your Body's Many Cries For Water" and you'll cherish them for life.
8) Being a rational woman I ask "What do you have to lose?", July 8, 2000, By MotherLodeBeth (Sierras of California)
This review is from: Your Body's Many Cries for Water (Paperback) As Reviewer: Michael Foudy (mlf2@erols.com) from Falls Church, VA noted Dr Batmanghelidj advise is very simple: "to drink one ounce of water for every two pounds of body weight plus one and one half additional ounces of water for every ounce of beverage I consume containing caffeine, carbonation or alcohol. Do this every day."
Being an educated, rational woman I am not prone to ideas that border to the skeptic on quackery. But this book is serious medical and science information and should be in every community library and every home library. It is that basic and that simple.
Add to the fact I had been diagnosed with Lupus and beginning stages of Fibromyalgia. Then when I sought information in order to make informed decisions on treatment and lifestyle changes all I got was either major pity party and victim mode information or it is mental and one just needs to learn to live with it. Well I refuse to allow anything to stop me from living a full and healthy life so I started to seriously look into lifestyle changes and came smack dab to this wonderful book.
Like way to many Americans I thought if the beverage was "wet" that it was akin to water. And yes I am embarrassed to admit that I have worked in third world countries re: Peace Corps and Doctors Without Borders and know firsthand that clean water projects are #1 as far as preventative health care goes. So this book basically spells this simple fact out. Our bodies need water and as Americans we have such easy access to water with filter systems if needed, and as such we are looking at one of the least perhaps the least expensive preventative as well as healing gift around.
And if you are a woman and have any type of menses pain before during or after, or have had bouts with skin flare ups and urinary track infections and yes yeast infections this book will be the best medicine you ever gave yourself. Not only do I have no signs of the Lupus or Fibromyalgia but since drinking even more water than Dr suggests (because I like water) my joint pain is no more, my skin is healthy,my hair is healthy and my insomnia is gone. And yes, because I drink more water my kidneys function better, thus the toxins are flushed out more and so I have been losing weight easier and faster. My muscle tone is better and the only thing I have had to do was shower twice a day since I sweat from my workouts and need to wash the toxins in my sweat away. And I often ask myself "why did it take me so long to discover such a simple secret to health?"
As a side note, stop and think about how often water is mentioned in history as a healing tool. One need not be religious to realize that water is a basic need in life. That our bodies being mostly water, are akin to a river that needs fresh water flowing thru it at all times.
My only question is this. What do you have to lose and what do you have to gain by trying his simple suggestion?
The above testimonial on treating dehydration symptoms that can lead to serious health problems asks a question we can’t highlight enough. “What could it hurt to try & drink more water?” It seems such a logical strategy. Also, proponents could certainly find better ways to profit off of readers than merely suggesting that you all drink more free water, right?
9) One of the Few Most Important Health Books Written, June 23, 2004, By Kent Ponder (Albuquerque., NM USA), This review is from: Your Body's Many Cries for Water (Paperback)
Without condescending to read it, I had pooh-poohed the idea of this book for years. "Who needs to be told to drink water?" I thought. "Everyone already knows that." Then one afternoon, by accident, I saw it on a reshelving cart at a bookstore, and flipped through it. My new reaction was, "Oh, my God!" There I stood, as a Ph.D. scientist, looking at the book I'd made fun of, and I felt like a fool as I read key sections in several chapters.
I bought two copies (one to underline, with marginal notes; the other to lend out), and read through it in one sitting, after which I looked up Dr. Batmanghelidj in Virginia and phoned him for an extended conversation. I found him very congenial, unpretentious and blazingly competent. Since that day several years ago I have recommended this book to hundreds of people, and I've provided free copies to many doctors, dentists and youth counselors.
Cocky, presumptuous health practitioners, even more arrogant than I had earlier been about this subject, find this book easy to dismiss if they haven't read it, and I identify with their foregone-conclusion mentality, having been there myself prior to understanding this book. To the rest of you, whether you believe you're knowledgeable about health issues or not, I can only plead with you to read this book and take it seriously. In my case, I had been repeatedly plagued by headaches and lower-back pain before reading it, but not once since applying its recommendations. The orthopedic section alone is worth the price of the book. If you know anyone with asthma, it would be tragic not to buy a copy of this for them.
In short, though I have read literally hundreds of books on health and nutrition, I consider this book to be, without doubt, one of the very few most important and immediately practical ever written.
10) It Works, March 27, 2008, By Capitalone "Jerry Thompson" (Lake Butler, Florida)
It works. I am now drinking 12 glasses of water a day. Most is distilled and a few from well water, the transformation took effort However was worth it. No one before stressed the importance of hydration. I am thankful that Amazon.com, brought my attention to the book, based on my previous orders. :) jerry thompson
11) a breakthrough book!, November 11, 2007, By tedz "tedz" (New York, NY United States)
dr. b should get a nobel prize for his breakthrough work on the vital importance of at least 8 glasses of water per day plus sea salt to prevent chronic dehydration of our cells and body - a condition all too prevalent and usually undetected by doctors and victims alike - we don't feel thirsty until the last stages of dehydration - read this book! it could extend your life
12) Water: For Health, for Healing, for Life: You're Not Sick, You're Thirsty!, May 18, 2007 By Meli- Wellness Coach "Meli, Wellness Coach" (Tucson, AZ)
I would recommend this book for anyone who is interested in becoming healthy & remaining healthy.
I do not agree that TAP WATER is healthy & would recommend people drink filtered water. I would also caution them to only use #1 or #2 plastic for bottles.
I have to agree that, if possible, you should drink filtered water. Again, what could it hurt to pay a few cents per gallon for healthy filtered water?
13) Water: For Health, for Healing, for Life: You're Not Sick, You're Thirsty!, March 9, 2006 By P. Kroon (Manti, Utah, USA)
I have a large list of books already piled up to read and felt that I already got the message without reading the book. Drink more water (about half your weight in ounces) with a dash of salt in it. That is a good place to start, but it is definitely worth getting this book and reading the rest of the story. Just learning to distinguish the many different 'thirst pains' of the body is worth buying and reading this book. It is well written and rather easy to read considering how technical some of the material can get. I'm sure anyone reading this book will realize that their many different 'maladies' they are suffering from can amazingly and affordably be cured with sufficient hydration. I myself have been suffering for years with some of these 'problems' myself only to discover the cure has been staring me in the face all this time.
P. Kroon makes a point about why not just drink more water & save time & money on the book. But reading books on chronic dehydration symptoms offers knowledge you are not likely to have. Also it reminds & inspires you to drink water.
14) Water, water, water, August 29, 2006, By L. Chowen (Whidbey Island)
This author has a series of books with the same message: drink water! What I find helpful about his books is that he goes into great detail about the WHYs. [We read in many places that water is important, but without the very specific information he offers, I find it easy to brush aside the 'drink water' message.] He tells us how to determine how much water our own body needs and how to make sure you are getting the right balance of water and salt.
15) Amazing much needed information, November 22, 2006, By Brandeline (United States)
How often have we heard the advice through our lives to drink at least 8 glasses of 'water-water' (as opposed to other beverages) per day? How many of us do? I thought I was drinking enough since I always seem to have a glass in my hand as a lifelong habit, but after actually counting glasses for several days, I realized I'm coming up a little short every day.
Just that one change of consciously drinking more water and getting a little salt every day has made me feel immensely better and diminished many of the symptoms of dehydration that I never knew about before Dr. 'Batman's book came to me. A great book! It's connected so many other things together for me that I already knew about health and nutrients. Startling and yet such a simple sensible idea.
A very good point. Try counting the glasses of water you drink per day. Bet you fall short of 8 glasses. In fact, in a group of people who tried drinking 8 glasses a day & believed they were drinking 8 glasses of water a day, it was found they were averaging only 5 glasses a day.
16)#G. Martin
The book is about water and SALT. Unless you incorporate the SALT along with the water, your body will not correct the problem 100%. But if you incorporate the SALT, along with the water, and avoid the dehydrating caffeine in tea, coffee, soft drinks) and chocolate, you will not believe the results unless you experience them or are close to someone who experiences the results.
The contents of this book are amazing, and the letters from MD's confirming this discovery is too revealing of the dilemna we have allowed to persist - that of "treating" and "milking the problem" without taking the corrective steps to eradicate the problem and educate the public. The fact still exists that each one of us is responsible for what we do and for what we accept as truth. Don't take anyones word for anything, try it for yourself - you be judge, jury, and prosecutor. Are you not already the victim?
This a most remarkable book, and along with Dr. Batman's earlier book, "Your Bodies Many Cries For Water", answers the questions we all ask, and for which the answers will not come from the NIH, AMA, and "support" groups for asthma and many if not all others. Dr. Batmanghelidj calls it the "Sick Care Industry". And why will the simple answer not come from these institutions? Simply because "there is no money in it" - there is no money in water and salt. But there are billions in "treating" asthma, allergies, cancer, lupus, ms, diabetes, and the list goes on.
Use your God given head, and your God given common sense.
What's the first thing given to patients when admitted in the hospital due to severe illness of any kind?
Yes, great guess, a SALINE SOLUTION DIRECTILY INTO THE BLOOD.
Cause it's the best thing for your sick body.
Hello? Hello? Hello? Is anyone out there? Is anyone listening? Is anyone using their God Given Common Sense?
Get this book and READ IT, and DO IT.
Then see if you don't start to look around you and begin to ask "uncomfortable" questions.
Get on the web and search for water cure, salt cure, etc.
And, by the way, if you believe what you find on snopes as if God Himself had written it, then you will have a difficult road to travel.
The following review is from a medical doctor & describes her use of hydration with patients. It is long but worth reading.
17) Water, water, everywhere and not a drop to drink!", April 7, 2005, By Nalin Nirula (India)
Dr B's book is one of the most useful detailed observations about wellness and disease relating to our relationship with water, well correlated and compellingly illustrated with concurring scientific findings--all of which are available in any good medical text on the human physiognomy.
The book covers detailed understandings of water shortage in the body related to asthma, allergies, blood pressure disorders, diabetes, constipation, auto-immune diseases, pain, heartburn, hiatal hernia, colitis, ulcers, rheumatoid arthritis, obesity, depression, gout---the list goes on and contains practically all the well-known and well-experienced villains of ill-health!
Although there are no clinically detailed case studies, for a book of this nature these are not needed. Dr B's observations and references to the relevant current medical teaching make for a solidly convincing case for reversing with water therapy what Dr B calls "Chronic Unintentional Dehydration". Most of our body is composed of water (about 75%). To think that dehydration takes place only when severe symptoms and bodily reactions take place is one the greatest single errors anyone can make as far as health and wellness is concerned. Like Coleridge's ancient mariner, in the present day we seem to be marooned upon a painted ocean going nowhere, losing our health because we have forgotten what it means to drink enough water.
Many people have knocked this finding of Dr B's without going into the merits of the findings that water is a fundamental nutrient for the body, chronic shortfall of which leads to serious dysfunction and disease. A key observation by Dr B is the pointing out the distinction between 'free' water availability in the body and the water that is priority-wise tied up with the body's metabolic functions, and the results of lack of free water in the body.
One reviewer took exception to Dr B's conclusion that morning sickness of pregnancy was not a sign of dehydration. Observation and results must guide any scientific search or research, not linking apparently similar end-points of 'dis-ease' under differing conditions--in this case: nausea-vomiting of long-distance cycling exertion (or some other cause) equated to the nausea-vomiting (morning sickness) of pregnancy.
In my own practise I confirm that Dr B's findings are perfectly correct, and the reason for it is quite straightforward. It is a signal that 'food/nutrition' other than water must not be taken, (water being a major nutrient for the body). This is because the digestion of food (even juice or milk) requires the body to tie up water resources at the cost of reduced functionality of other areas of the body where there is already a water shortfall. Morning sickness is entirely and quickly reversible by adding a proper water intake as well as a pinch of unrefined sea salt. Plain water intake acts very significantly different to watery foodstuffs in the bodily metabolism--again a fact available in any standard medical text.
In the relatively brief period of time I have systematically applied this knowledge to my practice, I have observed remarkable cures with just the addition of the water rehydration therapy to whatever other measures were being taken. In my own practise as a healer, based on Dr. B's findings I use the water requirement guideline for everyone who comes for treatment. (I give my rehydration protocol at the end of this review).
2+ Years Chronic periodic high fever (up to 105 F) in a female child of 9 years living in New Delhi, which was undiagnosed by all modern clinical tests and was over the past two and a half years variously treated as: repeated tonsillitis/acute strep infection (no medicine helped except homeopathy), Typhoid fever, tuberculosis, and of course 'Pyrexia of Unknown Origin' (PUO)and 'NAD' (not able to diagnose). The mother had been giving the child fruit juices and milk more or less as a 'healthy' alternative to water while the child had no more than 8-12 ounces of water per day.
All juices were stopped. In this particular episode, all antibiotics that had been given continuously for 10 days were stopped in the morning (fever 103 F) and increasing the water intake to between 800-1000 mls for the day, plus 2 pinches of unrefined sea salt on the tongue directly started bringing down the fever within 1 hour; fever gone in 3 more hours with no repetition of fever since then. All fruit juices were stopped. The liver and spleen enlargement disappeared in a few days.
Beginnings of arthritic knees in a 74 year old male from Nepal hitherto healthy, with inability to walk usual distances reversed by 30% in 15 days by his own report with the water rehydration protocol. He continues to improve slowly, where all painkillers and anti-inflammatories failed--he has stopped using anti-inflammatories on his own. If we factor in the fact that he has improved by 30% in distance walkable and pain after having given up the painkillers taken so far, I would think his improvement rate is actually much greater than 30% as a comparable situation.
Other results with rehydration therapy--Many cases of acute constipation reversed/cured; burning in urine with no infection and days later urinary infection diagnosed reversed and cured where antibiotics failed; chronic migraine headaches with nausea, vomiting---reversed/cured. Skin infections, pimples--cured. Angina pains--reversed/healed/cured. (Too early to say what is the clinical/pathological picture--it is under observation). Tear in the meniscus of knee requiring surgery healed with water therapy (and other energy healing methods) not now needing surgery according to the surgeon. Back aches and pains(slipped discs, sciatica) reversed= pain-free within days of water therapy (+ simple exercises in Dr B's book on backaches and arthritis--"How to deal simply with Rheumatoid joint pain & Back Pain"). Acidity and indigestions--healed. Irritable bowel syndrome with bleeding--healed alongwith addition of sugar water as recommended by Dr.B. For the auto-immune disorder, vasculitis (Behcets disease), the symptoms improved in 2 weeks on water +salt +vitamin regimen and continue to do so.
Conclusions: (1)The rehydration therapy works as a stand alone protective, preventive measure against disease. (2)The water therapy reverses many serious disease conditions. (3)Other therapies work much better with the water therapy, and in many cases additional medicinal/surgical measures are not needed where previously considered essential or inevitable. (4)The Ayurvedic dictum "indigestion is the mother of all disease" is fully proven here as all disease arise from three indigestion conditions:(a)Inability to digest (transform) the intake of food/liquids, emotions and thoughts; (b) Inability to expel/excrete indigestible matter or toxic matter (material or emotional), leading to: (c)Storage and accumulation in body fat and body tissues distorting the structures and functions of the body's organs and working systems.
Summary of the Rehydration protocol that I use based on Dr B's work is as follows:
Body weight in kilograms multiplied by 35 milliliters=Standard Total Plain water requirement per 24 hours. (Wt.KG x 35 mls or: Wt.Pounds x 0.55 ounces).
To the Standard Plain water requirement ADD the fluid amount (ounces or mls) of tea+coffe+colas multiplied by 1.1 as these fluid are diuretic as well as inducing sweating (the hot drinks)so you lose more water than you take in with these beverages.
This brings up the total plain water requirement for 24 hours. (Other fluids such as milk/juices do not count for supplementing the plain water requirement because being foods the body responds very differently to them as compared to plain water.) Add to this a couple of pinches of sea salt a day, and in a few hours/days/weeks the condition starts to reverse.
Telling people 'drink more water' or 'drink 10-12 glasses of water a day' is rarely followed, and people have a greatly erroneous idea about their actual water intake! I find a written schedule handed out to my patients works unfailingly.
The protocol I follow for adults as per Dr. B. is:
About 2 glasses of water (1 glass=8 ounces/230 mls) on waking in morning.
1 to 2 glasses of water 1/2 hour before meals.
1 glass of water 2-1/2 hours after a meal.
Other plain water during day as needed.
One multivitamin with minerals, and Vitamin B6 (50-100 mg per day) rounds off the program. (In practise I find the vitamins may not be needed after a few weeks if there is a dietary change in favor of a healthier diet which include more fresh vegetable and some fruits and nuts.)
This seems to be working very well generally. One of the first things to be noticed by all was that frequency of passing urine increased and the color became pale. (According to Ayurvedic guidelines passing urine 6 times a day is normal.) In the case of people who have water-retention/edema, a temporary salt restriction in food along with placing a pinch of sea salt on the tongue twice a day along with gradual increase of water helps in a few days to clear up such chronic conditions. The salt on tongue seems to get the brain to reorder the body's potassium-sodium-water balance when there is adequate availability of free water in the body. The need for diuretics and their attendant ill-effects was eliminated.
I do not offer any of the above as medical advice or suggestions-- I only share a summary of my observations as a results of following Dr. B's protocol. For complete details refer to his book. Anyone who understands and follows Dr. B's regimen can benefit similarly as have many patients in my practise. The man was a genius and apparently is still being greatly misunderstood. (He passed away in 2004).
Five Stars is too small a rating for knowledge of such great importance.
18) Life Saving, June 6, 2006, By Leona Eanes "book woman" (Hardy, VA USA)
I can't express enough about how much this book has helped me. I have been taking nutrition classes and heard about Dr Batmanghelidj's philosophy about the importance of drinking water. Boy, you could have knocked me over with a feather. Finally, someone explaining exactly why this vital step in our day to day nutrition is so important. When I started following his treatment advice, I would tell such a difference in the way that I felt. It never occurred to me that I was dehydrated because I drank some juices as well as tea, and diet drinks on a daily basis. I found within 2 weeks, that I was actually craving water. The only difference is that I enjoy distilled water that I make at home. Definitely, worth reading. It will amaze you of how much water plays in our every day health. Good luck!
Yes, if you increase your water drinking, in a few weeks, you will find that your thirst is not quenched after drinking fluids other than water. In other words, you have gone back to what nature intended, needing water to slake your thirst.
19) Great book with wise advise...., January 22, 2006, By MotherLodeBeth "MotherLodeBeth" (Sierras of California)
Having bought and read the authors book Your Body's Many Cries For Water and given copies of it to friends I was interested in what he had to say in this new book and wasn't disappointed. Water is something that is written about in every religion and is depicted on cave walls thousands of years old. Early settlers here in the states sought homesteads near fresh water. Yet, American don't drink enough water and our health shows it. This is a vast contrast to the third world where fresh water projects are what people request more than any other issue.
The authors chapter 11 which details many ailments and why water is needed to reduce or remove the ailment is worth the price of the book. Chapter 12 which discusses why it has to be water and not just any liquid, is something Americans who consume more soft drinks and coffee than any other country need to read. On page 159 he discusses the importance of water in reducing obesity which is a must read in my opinion.
The author gives an excellent real life example of a woman named Shahla who would drink a glass of wine and lay pool side in order to de-stress from a hectic life and lose weight. The woman became so dehydrated from not drinking water that her body went into shock and what she ended up with was water being put into her by medical professionals and a thirteen thousand dollar hospital bill. Think of how drinking water would have prevented this from happening and ask yourself if you are making similar mistakes.
The author drives home the point that lack of water will dehydrate the brain and other organs much faster than one imagines and that one cannot wait until they are thirsty, but have to drink water throughout the day to stay totally healthy.
20) BEST BOOK !!!!, January 22, 2004, By CDig "carlaandtrevor" (Florida)
Everyone should own a copy of this book!! If everyone drank the water they should, we wouldn't be feeding as much $$ to the pharmacuetical companies... water is free and our bodies need it for everything!! Very enlightening information... do not hesitate to get this book!! I paid full cover price at Barnes and Nobles (knowing I could get it here cheaper) because
I couldn't stop reading it and its worth every penny!! I can feel a big difference and I'm telling everyone about it! It's not fair keeping this kind of knowledge a secret!! And what's more-- every doctor should have a copy in his/her practice and in turn, educate their patients... but since that won't happen, we have to help eachother and educate ourselves... hope this helps.
21) More people should read it, August 14, 2005, By Andrew (China)
It is a nice book. I think, more people should read it. What is lacking, are scientific references to his claims. As an engineer and quality controller I don't take things for face value, I need to see some proof for any claim.
Therefore I searched the Internet for the claims and explanations as well as books on microbiology and biochemistry. I'm not through yet, things are not stored in one place for easy reference and often you need to check several places to see whether they say the same and still don't refer to the same source. Anyway, so far I didn't find anything that is contradictory to any claim in the book (which does not mean that there isn't anything contradictory, it just says, I haven't found it yet, and I'm not a scientist with access to all scientific material).
Strangely I found some coincidences not listed in this book.
Carbohydrates, proteins and lipids (fats) need water for cracking the molecules into smaller parts. Could it be that storage of fat in the body is just another way to get water? Since 3 water molecules are released for each molecule of triglyceride stored.
You can look it up yourself if you want.
Anyway, I started to drink more water and take more salt. My boyfriend didn't. I lost my depression, he didn't. I sleep well, he doesn't. This might not mean anything though.
I also found that I get health problems if I don't drink enough water during the week in the office.
One interesting touch: I look at different symptoms now with the "water eye". When somewhere "anti-histamine" is mentioned as treatment or symptome reduction treatment, the "water alarm" goes on, and I look further whether there are other references to be found, related to chronic disease, virus or water.Simple, stupid. Simple, brilliant, April 15, 2004
22) By Lana M. Sutton (Chattanooga, TN)
It makes total sense: keep a constant level of hydration in a machine made of 75 percent water, and the machine runs optimally, eradicating toxins, digesting nutrients, providing energy. But it certainly won't make any money for big-Pharm, Dr. Pill and the food-lite industry, and that's what we're all here for these days isn't it?
23) Easy simple to apply remedy for most of our illneses, April 27, 2005, By Milton Drepaul (Toronto, Ontario Canada)
Somehow we have been persuaded that natural products that have been here since the dawn of time are harmful to us. Water is one of those products.
I have found that simply following Dr. B's advice has had a profoundly positive effect on my health. Now I rarely drink soft drinks or juices. My weight dropped and stabilized.I eat smaller portions because after drinking water before and after meals I no longer want to eat as much as I did before.I do not have any major illnesses and very rarely have colds or flu.
Fortunately for me I was easily able to integrate water into my life because I use a small machine called a Chi Machine. The manufacturer recommended that users drink a glass of water before getting on the machine and after. So since I use it twice a day I was quickly able to get into the habit of drinking water. I do drink filtered water. I am sensitive to the taste of chlorine in tap water. I use a Brita filter.
I first read Dr.B's Your Body's Many Cries for water in 1994. My first 4 copies of the book were 'borrowed' and never returned. I was surprised at how easy it was for some people to adopt the watercure.
It is not easy for most of us to undo bad habits. I estimate it will take probably one month of determination to get going but once you establish the habit you are on your way.
Eleven years later I do not regret being persuaded to go back to drinking water. Although Dr. B. did not approve of tea drinking I continued drinking about one cup a day.
I am not a fanatic. I still love the occasional freshy brewed cup of coffee.
24) A MUST READ!, January 6, 2005, By Patricia H. Fabricius "advocate of independen.. (Afton, New York United States)
I am ordering several of copies of this book. This is the best gift anyone can give to someone they care about and hopefully they will pass on the wisdom shared to others. I am a medical transcriptionist, grandmother and avid reader of nonfiction and self-help books. This is the best - I mean THE BEST I have been blessed with finding. It saddens me that our medical profession isn't passing on this truth regarding water. Standard advice seems to be "push fluids" which is deception to us all. PUSH WATER is what needs to be instructed. The only reason I can think of that this advice is not shared loudly is the fact that WATER doesn't have to cost a lot of money. It seems there are a lot of cures for a lot of ailments that don't have to cost a fortune but if low cost (no cost), common sense treatments are shared look at the loss of money to the medical profession. I say shout it from the rooftops! DRINK WATER..DRINK WATER and don't think ANY FLUID is a substitute! Within a week - the difference is felt.
