Treatment for mesothelioma

Dehydration, contamination & mesothelioma

The following discussion of treatment for mesothelioma is followed by a discussion of how dehydration effects mesothelioma formation & how contamination in water & other sources leads to mesothelioma.

Unfortunately, there is to date no mesothelioma cure. We briefly discuss the orthodox approaches & alternative approaches including using water as a preventive for mesothelioma.

Is there a mesothelioma cure ?

Not quite yet. Some prelim research shows promise, especially those targeting the immune system. However, it may be years before those treatments are available to the general public.

The key seems to be prevention.

Prevention includes the obvious - avoiding asbestos exposure, to having the kind of body that fights off cancer formation.

For now, if a patient has been diagnosed with advanced mesothelioma, the life expectancy is about 5 years. However, there are a few cases in which patients have lived longer.

Types of treatment for mesothelioma

Radiation is one treatment for mesothelioma * Surgery can be used for one of two reasons: 1)to cure the disease by removing it or 2)to keep the patient more comfortable and improve the quality of life.

Tragically, because mesothelioma is usually diagnosed in late stages, curative surgery is rarely an option.

Surgery is usually used to relieve pain & improve the quality of life.

* Radiation therapy is used on patients that are too ill for surgery or chemotherapy.

Radiation causes the fewest side effects and is easier to tolerate than chemo. The different forms of radiation therapy available to patients mostly to improve the patient’s comfort level.

Radiation may also be used in addition to surgery.

* Chemotherapy does not cure mesothelioma but can provide relief from the horrible symptoms of the mesothelioma.

Someday, chemotherapy may go a lot further in prolonging the life of a mesothelioma victim as traditional medicine advances.

* Biological treatment is a promising recent approach to cancer treatment, including treatment of mesothelioma. It attempts to use the body’s own defense mechanisms to fight tumor cells.

Specifically, researchers are exploring how the immune system can be strengthened to destroy cancerous cells.

* Alternative treatments for mesothelioma, which include herbal remedies for mesothelioma also work by enabling the patient's immune system to recognize and destroy the tumor tissue.

Alternatives may use cancer vaccines to stimulate the patient's immune system and destroy tumor cells.

Alternative treatment can also aim at helping patients expel toxins thought to contribute to cancer formation.

Some promising anecdotal results have been obtained using alternative therapies. However, cost, accessibility & publicity have kept alternative approaches on the fringes of mesothelioma treatment.

Dehydration & mesothelioma

Dehydration & contamination impede treatment mesothelioma Our page on cancer discussed how dehydration, even mild chronic dehydration, could contribute to cancer formation.

Briefly, dehydration damages DNA within cells, effects repair of cells & suppresses the immune system. Also, the body needs water to detox itself, that is, rid itself of useless or toxic particles.

We cannot say for sure that reversing dehydration could treat mesothelioma but it can’t hurt.

Whatever, stage you are in, be sure you are hydrated.

Water contamination & mesothelioma

Our page on Contamination also discussed how water contamination could lead to cancer.

We know that asbestos particles are cancer producing contaminants.

That suggests that it’s vital that mesothelioma patients drink water that is contaminant free.

Again, we cannot say for sure that drinking water that is not contaminated is a treatment for mesothelioma.

However, it must be one strategy combined with other interventions.

P.S. The link between asbestos & mesothelioma should squelch the argument that contaminants in water or other locales, do not lead to cancer formation. There are many studies showing a connection between contaminants & cancer & the specific facts regarding asbestos & mesothelioma reinforce what other cancer studies suggest.
