Water contamination,
hexavalent chromium

This page is about a new water contamination concern, hexavalent chromium, a heavy metal that leads to cancer in humans. We’ve already included chromium on our page on heavy metals in water

Now, new research points to increase of hexavalent chromium in our environment. Read on for the important, possibly life-saving details.

A consumer watchdog, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) tested the drinking water in 35 United States cities. They found that the overwhelming majority contained hexavalent chromium, thought to be a cancer causing element famously referenced in the film "Erin Brockovich."

Hexavalent chromium has long been known to cause lung cancer when inhaled. Now scientists have uncovered evidence that it causes cancer in experimental animals when ingested. It has been linked to increased levels of liver and kidney damage, leukemia, stomach cancer and other cancers.

The federal government has come to restrict the total amount of chromium in drinking water. It also mandates water utilities to test for it. However, that includes both trivalent chromium, which is a mineral that humans need to use up glucose, and hexavalent chromium, the metal that that had been found to be carcinogenic to lab animals.

The use of hexavalent chromium dates to the early 1990s. However, it’s still used in some industries, such as the manufacturing of plastics and dyes & chrome plating.

In 2009, California became the first state to limit the amount of hexavalent chromium in drinking water.

This new study found hexavalent chromium in the water of 31 out of 35 cities tested. In particular, Norman, Oklahoma was found to contain the highest levels, roughly 200 times the California limit.

The good news is that any quality water filter should be able to filter out hexavalent chromium from your water supply so do get one if you have any concerns.
