Colitis is an inflammatory condition which causes pain and sores (ulcers) in the lining of the large intestine, or colon.

It can also affect the entire colon. Generally, the more of the colon affected, the worse the more serious the condition is.

Cause of colitis

It may result from an abnormal response by the body's immune system to bacteria in the intestine. Disease-causing bacteria and viruses also may play a role in causing the condition.

However those scenarios are made possible by being in a state of even mild dehydration.

Moreover, as explained below, dehydration, in particular, results in constipation which can lead to colitis.

Colitis symptoms

Diarrhea up to 10 to 20 times per day

Rectal bleeding & mucus

Abdominal pain & cramping

Constipation (less common than diarrhea)

Loss of appetite

Fever can result in more severe cases

Weight loss as a result of ongoing symptoms, such as diarrhea

Anemia can result because of low iron levels caused by bloody stools or intestinal inflammation

Dehydration & colitis

As explained in the section on constipation & dehydration (link), not having adequate water forces the body to pull water away from the abdominal region including the colon.

The available water is diverted to body parts that have higher priority such as the brain, heart & blood.

Without sufficient water in the abdominal area, the risk of several diseases are increased.

For example, water is needed to rid the body of germs & viruses.

Also, immune functioning is suppressed.

Finally, constipation often results if you are even mildly dehydrated.

All of those precursors have been linked to dehydration.

Colitis prevention

As in many other disorders, the best preventive against colitis is general good health.

More specifically, starting on a program of drinking water consistently is a great first step. (See “Colitis cure” below for more advice on drinking water to prevent /treat colitis.)

Colitis cure

Dr. Batmanghelidj reports that simply drinking water first thing in the morning is enough to reduce colitis pain, if not initiate a colitis cure.

Work up to at least 2 glasses.

Be sure to work up to 8 - 12 glasses of water per day preferably on an empty stomach.

Try to drink filtered water to prevent drinking extra contaminants.

Be patient. Drinking more water may result in something resembling a colitis cure but it may take time for your body to learn to use the extra available water.
